Safety

Because insulin pumps deliver insulin continuously, it’s understandable that you might be concerned about how safe the pump is. Medtronic insulin pumps are designed with the following systems to enhance safety.

Safety System Checks

The Medtronic Paradigm® Platform of Insulin Pumps® conducts software checks every minute, with every button press, and prior to each motor actuation. That’s more than 15,000 safety checks per day!

In addition, the Independent Over Infusion microprocessor has one job: To make sure that each tenth of a unit delivery of insulin does not exceed any safety maximums and is within programmed settings. These and other safety checks ensure the accurate and reliable delivery of insulin, year after year.

A Sensitive Occlusion Detector

An occlusion alarm alerts you if insulin isn’t being delivered. This could happen if the infusion line were closed in a door, for example, or if the tubing developed an occlusion. The more sensitive the alarm, the faster you’ll be alerted to the situation. The Medtronic Paradigm® Platform of Insulin Pumps® is designed to sound an alarm within two to four units of missed insulin. That’s as much as five times faster than pumps with older technology.

Individual Delivery Maximums

Each person on a Medtronic Paradigm® insulin pump can program their pump to have a maximum meal bolus and a maximum basal rate. These maximums ensure that the pump wearer can’t program the bolus or basal settings into unsafe ranges for specific insulin requirements.
